Stoke City Farewell to 'One of the Best' as Spurs Defender Departs

A Final Farewell for Ashley Phillips

Ashley Phillips is set to play his final game for Stoke City today, with manager Mark Robins acknowledging the impact he has made during his time at the club. The 20-year-old centre-half will make his 83rd appearance for Stoke in what could be the end of his second long-term loan spell from Tottenham Hotspur.

Phillips' performances in the latter half of last season were impressive, and it initially seemed unlikely that he would return in the summer. However, this time around, it appears that his stint with Stoke may truly be coming to an end. While the future remains uncertain, there is a possibility that their paths could cross again in the future.

Reflections on a Successful Loan Spell

Mark Robins, who took charge of Stoke City, has expressed his appreciation for Phillips' contributions. "He’s been, I think, one of the best loan players I’ve ever had," said Robins. "I inherited him last year and then brought him back in the summer."

Robins highlighted Phillips' availability, robustness, desire, and commitment to the club. "He is a top, top individual. He is so low maintenance and that's exactly what you want. He's available all the time. His level of performance has always been high and he's a young player learning. It's been a really successful couple of seasons for him."

Looking Ahead for Stoke City

While Phillips may be leaving, he won't be the only player making a final appearance this afternoon. Robins is already thinking about the future and the kind of signings he hopes to bring in over the next few months.

"I think that you can wait and see," he said. "There is definitely some good work going on. What we have to do, what I would like us to do, is get a really good, robust team together that will run and can run and is prepared to run, prepared to fight."

Robins emphasized the importance of physical and mental strength, as well as leadership. "When you go away to Charlton next year you have to be able to cope with that, not just hoping to play really good football to beat someone without having too much physical contact. That’s not what we have been about. I’m looking for aggression, whether that be physical, mental or having that real desire and that comes into the leadership category."

A Supportive Fanbase

Stoke City will be supported by an 11th sell-out away end of the season, and Robins knows that giving the fans something to cheer about would be a positive way to head into the summer.

"That’s the aim," he said. "There will be a team out there which I think will be capable of going to Bristol or anywhere and be able of competing. I look forward to that."

Robins also acknowledged the challenges faced in recent weeks. "The last few weeks have been very, very difficult. We’ve tried to compete with what we’ve had available and it’s just been disjointed. Hopefully it looks a little more cohesive."
