A Major Role in Australia’s Energy Infrastructure

A North East-based subsea cable company is set to play a significant role in supplying energy to homes in Victoria and South Australia. JDR Cable Systems (JDR Cables), a company based in Hartlepool and part of the TFKable Group, has recently secured a contract with Australian operator Amplitude Energy Ltd for its East Coast Supply Project. This initiative aims to deliver gas to the Athena Gas Plant, located offshore Victoria.

The project involves the supply of approximately 18 kilometres of hydraulic control umbilicals by JDR, with potential for an additional 13 kilometres, depending on drilling success. JK Lim, regional sales manager at JDR, highlighted the significance of this contract, stating that it reflects JDR's proven capability in delivering high-quality subsea control umbilicals for complex offshore developments. He added that the company is pleased to support Amplitude Energy’s East Coast Supply Project and looks forward to delivering reliable solutions that will contribute to long-term gas supply for Victoria.

    Enhancing Gas Supply and Infrastructure

The Athena Gas Plant has a processing capacity of up to 150 terajoules per day and supplies gas to homes and businesses across Victoria and South Australia. JDR’s scope of work includes thermoplastic electro-hydraulic production control umbilicals and associated distribution equipment such as termination assemblies, heads, and both electrical and hydraulic flying leads. These components will be delivered in line with an offshore installation campaign scheduled for late 2027.

The equipment will be integrated with existing subsea infrastructure connected to the Athena Gas Plant, enhancing the value of current assets. Manufacturing will take place at JDR’s Hartlepool facility, which will use local supply chains for materials and hardware. This approach supports JDR’s commitment to UK industry and expanding its export strategy.

    Key Components of the Project

    • Hydraulic Control Umbilicals: JDR will provide approximately 18 km of these critical components, with potential for an additional 13 km.
    • Thermoplastic Electro-Hydraulic Production Control Umbilicals: These are essential for the operation of the gas plant and will be manufactured at JDR’s Hartlepool facility.
    • Distribution Equipment: Includes termination assemblies, heads, and both electrical and hydraulic flying leads, all necessary for the integration of new systems with existing infrastructure.
    • Offshore Installation Campaign: Scheduled for late 2027, this phase will involve the deployment of the newly manufactured components.

Supporting Local Industry and Export Strategy

JDR’s involvement in this project not only highlights its technical expertise but also reinforces its commitment to supporting local industry. By using local supply chains for materials and hardware, the company is contributing to the economic growth of the region. This approach aligns with JDR’s broader export strategy, aiming to expand its presence in international markets while maintaining strong ties to the UK.

The project underscores the importance of subsea infrastructure in modern energy systems, particularly in regions like Victoria and South Australia, where reliable gas supply is crucial for both residential and commercial sectors. As JDR continues to develop its capabilities in subsea technology, it is well-positioned to play a key role in future energy projects both domestically and internationally.
