Strengthening Ties: Nigeria and Somalia Commit to Enhanced Cooperation

Nigeria and Somalia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in critical areas such as security, economic development, and migration management. This renewed focus came after a high-level meeting between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, and the Somali Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Osman Mohamed, held at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

The discussions were highlighted in a statement released by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Wednesday. During the meeting, Ahmed welcomed the Somali envoy and emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen diplomatic engagement with Somalia. He noted that the interaction would help consolidate the long-standing cordial ties between the two nations.

Ahmed stated, “Nigeria is committed to supporting Somalia’s ongoing efforts towards stabilisation, institutional strengthening and national development, with full respect for its sovereignty.” This sentiment reflected Nigeria’s continued support for Somalia’s progress and stability.

In his remarks, the Somali ambassador stressed the need for closer collaboration, particularly in intelligence sharing, security cooperation, and institutional capacity-building. Mohamed emphasized the importance of structured mechanisms to address shared security challenges such as terrorism and transnational crime, while also promoting cultural exchange, technology transfer, and investment.

He provided an update on the current security situation in Somalia and expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s continued support, as well as that of the international community, in safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Shared Security Challenges and Collaborative Efforts

Responding to the Somali ambassador’s comments, Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s willingness to share its experience in tackling terrorism and insurgency through both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches. He highlighted key areas where collaboration could be beneficial, including maritime security, anti-piracy initiatives, and manpower development. These efforts, he said, are critical to regional stability and economic security.

Both sides also explored opportunities for economic cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, mining, digital technology, and fintech. They recognized the potential of these industries to drive growth and create jobs, especially for young people in both countries.

Additionally, the discussion focused on the importance of promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration across Africa as a strategy to address irregular migration challenges. Both nations acknowledged the need for coordinated efforts to ensure that migration is managed effectively and benefits all stakeholders involved.

Commitment to Sustained Engagement and Practical Outcomes

Both countries expressed a strong commitment to sustained engagement and practical outcomes that would benefit their citizens. Ahmed assured the Somali envoy of the ministry’s full support, expressing confidence that the engagement would usher in a new phase of productive bilateral relations.

This meeting marked an important step forward in strengthening the partnership between Nigeria and Somalia. The dialogue underscored the mutual recognition of shared interests and the potential for collaborative efforts to bring about positive change in the region.

As both nations continue to work together, they are likely to explore more avenues for cooperation, ensuring that their bilateral relationship remains robust and effective in addressing common challenges.
