McDonald's Malaysia Invests RM1b, Opens 100 New Outlets, Creates 10,000 Jobs

McDonald’s Malaysia Unveils RM1 Billion Expansion Plan

McDonald’s Malaysia has announced a significant investment of RM1 billion to expand its operations over the next five years. This ambitious plan aims to enhance restaurant accessibility, create economic opportunities, generate employment, and improve youth employability across the country. The initiative is led by managing director and local operating partner Datuk Azmir Jaafar, who emphasized that this strategic move aligns with the company’s long-term vision of developing a strong, future-ready Malaysian workforce.

As part of the expansion, McDonald’s plans to open 100 new restaurants, which are expected to create more than 10,000 job opportunities nationwide. This commitment reflects the company’s focus on supporting local communities and contributing to the growth of the domestic economy.

Local Supply Chain and Economic Impact

McDonald’s Malaysia continues to prioritize a predominantly local supply chain, with 75 per cent of its products sourced and produced within the country. This approach not only supports local suppliers but also contributes significantly to the growth of the domestic food industry. By investing in local partnerships, the company strengthens its role as a key player in Malaysia’s economic landscape.

Despite a challenging business environment over the past two years, McDonald’s Malaysia achieved a 26 per cent year-on-year growth in 2025. This success highlights the strong trust and loyalty Malaysians have for the brand. According to Azmir, this growth can be attributed to the company’s focus on customer demand, value offerings, innovative menu adaptations, and a commitment to operational excellence.

New Restaurants and Community Focus

The announcement coincided with the reopening of the McDonald’s Titiwangsa Drive-Thru along Jalan Pahang after a three-month closure for renovations. This development underscores the company’s ongoing efforts to improve customer experience and maintain high standards across all locations.

McDonald’s currently operates more than 370 outlets nationwide. Despite the challenges, the company managed to open seven new restaurants in 2025 and 11 stores in 2024. Azmir noted that there is growing demand in Sabah and Sarawak, where existing stores are unable to meet the needs of customers. This indicates that several new restaurant openings will be located in these states in the coming years.

Commitment to Employment and Youth Development

Community support remains at the core of McDonald’s identity. “We are a Malaysian company, and it is important to us that our success creates a meaningful impact in the communities we serve,” Azmir said. With more than 16,000 Malaysians currently employed, the company continues its 100 per cent local hiring policy.

Azmir emphasized that many young Malaysians view McDonald’s as their first working experience. “We take this responsibility seriously, as a first job can be transformational when supported with training, coaching, and opportunities to grow,” he added.

Vocational Academy and Workforce Development

Integral to the RM1 billion investment is the continued expansion of the McDonald’s Vocational Academy. Developed in collaboration with the Human Resources Ministry through the National Dual Training System, the Academy has been instrumental in uplifting underprivileged groups, including B40 youths, persons with disabilities, and members of the Orang Asli community.

Through vocational training and skill development programs, the academy provides valuable opportunities for individuals to gain practical experience and improve their employability. This initiative aligns with McDonald’s broader goals of fostering a skilled and diverse workforce.

Future Growth and Long-Term Vision

With planned investments in restaurant expansion, technology, workforce development, and community welfare, McDonald’s Malaysia reaffirms its commitment to long-term growth and nationwide contribution. The company’s strategic focus on innovation, sustainability, and community engagement ensures that it remains a key player in Malaysia’s fast-food industry while making a positive impact on society.
