Meta, TikTok, Google Boost Teen Digital Safety Features

Introduction to Enhanced Digital Safety Measures
Parents in Malaysia now have access to advanced digital safety tools that allow them to monitor their children's online activities more effectively. These tools include features like Meta Teen Accounts, Family Pairing on TikTok, and Family Link on Google. These initiatives are part of a broader effort by technology companies to ensure that the social media landscape remains secure and beneficial for young users.
Meta's Approach to Digital Safety
Amirah Amir, the public policy manager at Meta Malaysia, highlighted that the company has developed over 50 safety tools, guided by global experts in digital safety. These tools are designed to create a healthy online environment for users, especially teenagers aged 13 to 17.
"Trust and a positive user experience are fundamental to Meta’s business model. Today, digital platforms serve not only as tools for connectivity but also for education and business," she explained during a session held as part of the Safer Internet Campaign 2026.
Meta introduced Teen Accounts to provide additional oversight for younger users. These accounts come with automatic safety settings, such as private account mode for those under 15, which reduces the need for manual parental monitoring.
Key features of Teen Accounts include strict privacy settings that limit interactions to followed users and the 'Hidden Words' function, which filters out comments containing bullying or harassment.
"Users below 18 will be placed under Teen Accounts with the strictest settings. For those between 13 and 15, accounts are set to private mode and require parental consent for any changes," said Amirah.
Since its launch in September 2024, about 90% of users in this age group have continued using the preset privacy-mode safety settings.
TikTok's Family Pairing Feature
Aliff Zakaria, the public policy manager at TikTok, explained how the Family Pairing feature allows parents to link their accounts with their children’s accounts. This enables parents to manage screen time and restrict inappropriate content remotely.
"Through Family Pairing, parents can set their children’s accounts as either private or public and manage direct messages (DMs) to prevent contact with unknown parties," he said.
This feature provides an additional layer of control for parents, helping them ensure that their children engage with content that is appropriate for their age.
Google's Family Link Application
Arianne Santoso, the government affairs and public policy manager at Google, spoke about the Family Link application, which offers comprehensive controls for parents. This tool allows them to monitor downloaded applications, block access to age-inappropriate content, and set specific screen-time limits without needing to physically handle their children’s phones.
"If a child installs an application, we can see if it is unsuitable or age-appropriate. We can then block the application through Family Link without directly using the child’s phone," she explained.
Family Link gives parents the ability to maintain a safe digital environment for their children while still allowing them the freedom to explore online.
The Safer Internet Day 2026 Event
The event was held in conjunction with the observance of Safer Internet Day 2026. It aimed to promote safe, responsible, and positive internet use, particularly among children and youths. Organized by the Ministry of Communications and led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the event provided practical guidance on creating a safer digital environment for young users.
Themed ‘Smart Technology, Safe Choices: Safe and Responsible Use of AI’, the session offered valuable insights into how technology can be used responsibly, ensuring that children benefit from the digital world while remaining protected from potential risks.
