Opposition Party's Press Committee: Strengthen cyber leekja dispute mediation... Ensure the fairness of the arbitration body

The People Power Party's Press Special Committee held a discussion meeting on the 13th at the National Assembly titled "Exploring Ways to Expand the Functions of Mediation and Coordination for Eliminating Cyber Raccoon," and discussed measures to prevent defamation damage occurring on YouTube.
In his opening speech, Chairman Kim Sang-gyeom of the Special Committee on the Press said, "Our society is exposed to 'digital violence' where a single video and coordinates can destroy the daily life and livelihood of ordinary people. Cyber stalking is no longer just a form of deviance by a few."
However, it is a situation with clear limitations as too much time has passed for investigations and compensation, including the recovery from damage," he emphasized, stating that "the swift dispute resolution function of settlement must be further improved, and the fairness of the arbitration institution must be clearly guaranteed.
Lee Jin-hyuk, a professor of journalism at HanYang University who took the floor, pointed out, "Currently, defamation, sexual violence, and infringement of personal information are handled by different laws and agencies," and said, "there is a need for a single channel to address complex cases occurring in cyber sex crimes or deepfakes."
Meanwhile, it added, "It would be desirable to establish a dedicated mediation department for digital violence by expanding the functions of the existing Press Mediation Committee, or to set up an independent body separately," and expressed concerns toward the Broadcasting and Communications Media Review Committee, saying, "Since the recent restructuring, political accountability has been strengthened, raising concerns about its neutrality as a mediation body."
