Konami Unveils New Castlevania—But It's Surprisingly Different

Sony's latest State of Play event revealed a variety of new announcements from Konami, including updates on the iconic Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, and Silent Hill franchises, as well as the debut of a new JRPG series.
In our recent review of the Super Bomberman Collection, we noted that Konami had managed to bring back nearly all of its classic titles but had overlooked one of its most famous franchises—Castlevania—except for Metal Gear. However, this time around, Konami has finally announced a new entry in the Castlevania series, albeit not the high-budget 3D title many fans might have expected.
The game is called Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, and it's developed by the team behind the popular action-platformer Dead Cells. Interestingly, the Dead Cells developers already released a Castlevania-themed expansion, which hints at their familiarity with the franchise's style and mechanics.
Despite the success of the Netflix adaptation of Castlevania and the growing popularity of Soulslike games, Konami seems to be taking a more cautious approach with this new title. The reasons for this hesitation remain unclear, but the game is set in France, likely due to the location of the development studio. It features Trevor Belmont, a character who first appeared in Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse on the NES. This return to the roots of the series could be a strategic move to reconnect with long-time fans while introducing the franchise to a new audience.
The game is scheduled to release this year, but no specific date has been announced yet. Fans are eagerly awaiting more details about the gameplay, story, and release window.
