Taewang D&D Constructs Bomb-Proof AI Data Center

The Rise of AI Data Centers with Enhanced Security
With the increasing threat of conflicts in the Middle East and other global tensions, the construction of a state-of-the-art AI data center is currently underway. This facility will use super concrete not only for its exterior walls but also for internal columns. The goal is to ensure that the data center can withstand potential attacks from drones or terrorists, offering protection levels similar to those found in bomb shelters.
Taewang D&D, a subsidiary of Taewang E&C, has announced plans to build the Sacheon Sky City AI Data Center in Gyeongnam Province using super concrete (K-UHPC). This technology was transferred from the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) and is known for being up to six times stronger than regular concrete. The company emphasized that the entire structure, including the interior columns, will be made of this advanced material to provide maximum security and stability during conflicts or external attacks.
Data Centers as Key Targets in Modern Conflicts
In recent years, data centers have become critical targets in various conflicts. For example, on March 1 of last year, two Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were directly attacked by drones. Around the same time, a data center in Bahrain was also damaged. This marked the first instance of physical military attacks on U.S. big tech data centers, which had previously faced only hacking threats during regional conflicts. The aftermath of the AWS attack led to disruptions in local banking, delivery services, and telecommunications.
Strategic Collaborations for Digital Transformation
To enhance both the safety and functionality of the Sacheon Sky City AI Data Center, Taewang D&D has partnered with STLogic, a domestic company specializing in fourth-generation GPU-based database management systems (DBMS). This collaboration aims to digitally transform the vast amount of data generated by manufacturing sites in the Gyeongnam region in real-time. Once implemented, this system will allow local manufacturers to develop independent physical AI solutions using high-performance GPU-based AI infrastructure.
Noh Ki-won, chairman of Taewang E&C, stated that the Sacheon Sky City AI Data Center, set to be the world’s first data center with protective functions, will become a global standard beyond South Korea.
Expansion Plans and Future Development
In April of last year, Taewang D&D signed an investment agreement with Sacheon City and other partners to construct an ultra-large-scale AI data center with a capacity of 800MW on a 49,682-square-meter site within the Sacheon IC complex distribution and commercial district. The company has also applied for a power grid impact assessment to proceed with a second phase of 120MW in the future.
