VCSC Explores AI in Classrooms at Board Meeting

Vigo County School Corporation Hosts Board Meeting Focused on AI and Student Achievements

During a recent board meeting, the Vigo County School Corporation (VCSC) gathered to address key issues affecting the district, including the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms and celebrating student accomplishments. The event took place in West Terre Haute, Indiana, and provided an opportunity for community members to engage with school leaders and learn about upcoming initiatives.

Celebrating Athletic Successes

The meeting began with a focus on the achievements of the North Vigo and South Vigo High School wrestling teams. These teams shared highlights from their successful seasons, including athletes who reached the state finals. This segment served as a reminder of the diverse talents within the district and the dedication of students who excel in various areas.

Dr. Chris Himsel, the superintendent of VCSC, emphasized the importance of recognizing student achievements. "We are so blessed to have so many great students throughout the district and they’re doing so many different things," he said. "We’ve actually had a very diverse set of students, and we’ve been able to honor them here at our board meetings and give them recognition."

Exploring AI Integration in Education

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the use of AI in the classroom. Dr. John Newport, the deputy superintendent, provided an in-depth analysis of the current status of AI implementation and its potential benefits for students and educators.

"Looking into AI as far as implementation process," said Dr. Newport. "We’ve consulted national resources as well as The Indiana Department of Education has some wonderful resources with it. We’ve talked to some experts, both national experts and local experts on artificial intelligence and one thing that was very clear is that the first thing you want to make sure is that your policies are in place to protect both your students and your district."

The plan is to introduce AI tools such as Gemini, a Google Chrome AI tool, in classrooms starting in the fall of 2026. This initiative aims to enhance learning experiences and provide students with access to advanced technological resources.

Preparing for Summer School and Beyond

As the academic year draws to a close, the board also addressed plans for summer school classes. The meeting included a vote on approving summer school curriculums, reflecting the district's commitment to continuous learning and development.

"We have actually been working on summer school in our office. We’re always working a little bit ahead of where they are in the school. But this is an exciting time of the year because a lot of the hard work that’s been going into the entire year comes to fruition here in the spring months," said Himsel.

Looking Ahead

The discussion on AI integration and the celebration of student successes highlight the ongoing efforts of the Vigo County School Corporation to adapt to modern educational needs while maintaining a strong focus on student well-being and achievement. As the district moves forward, it will continue to explore innovative ways to support its students and prepare them for future challenges.
