Apple Settles Lawsuit Over AI Claims, Offers Cash Payments to iPhone Owners
Apple has agreed to a $250 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of false advertising related to its artificial intelligence (AI) features. The agreement means that owners of certain iPhones could receive up to $95 as compensation for what they claim were misleading marketing practices.
The lawsuit centered around Apple's promotion of new AI capabilities for its virtual assistant, Siri, during the launch of the iPhone 16 in 2024. These features were part of a broader initiative called "Apple Intelligence," which was marketed as a major upgrade to the user experience. However, consumers later discovered that many of the promised features were not available at the time of purchase, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.
Legal Allegations and Settlement Details
The lawsuit, filed in the San Francisco federal court for the Northern District of California, alleged that Apple misled customers by promoting AI features that had not yet been developed. According to the filing, this deception led consumers to buy devices they might not have purchased otherwise or to pay a higher price.
If approved by a judge, the settlement would be one of the largest ever for Apple. It covers approximately 37 million devices sold in the United States between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025. This includes all iPhone 16 models, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Eligible device owners will receive at least $25 per device, with the potential to receive up to $95 depending on the number of claims filed and other factors. Customers will be notified via email or mail about how to file a claim through a dedicated settlement website.
Apple’s Response and Ongoing AI Development
In a statement, Apple acknowledged the settlement, saying it was reached to resolve claims related to the availability of two additional features. The company emphasized that it is focused on delivering innovative products and services to users.
Apple admitted that it was caught off guard by the high level of consumer interest in the Siri AI features. Many buyers were frustrated upon learning that the promised enhancements would be delayed. The filing stated that these customers “would not have purchased the Eligible Devices or would have paid significantly less, had they known Enhanced Siri features were not available.”
Despite the legal challenges, Apple continues to work on its AI initiatives. While competitors like Google and Samsung have rolled out more advanced AI features on their devices, Apple is expected to unveil its Siri upgrade this year, likely at its annual developer conference next month.
Apple’s AI Roadmap
Apple has highlighted several features introduced since the launch of Apple Intelligence, including Visual Intelligence and Live Translations. These additions are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI into its ecosystem.
However, the delay in releasing key Siri features has raised questions about Apple’s ability to keep pace with the rapid evolution of AI technology. As the industry moves forward, Apple must continue to innovate to maintain its competitive edge.
What’s Next?
For affected iPhone owners, the next step is to monitor their emails and mail for notifications regarding the settlement process. Once the court approves the settlement, the claims process will begin, and eligible customers can apply for their share of the $250 million fund.
This case highlights the growing importance of transparency in tech marketing, especially when it comes to AI capabilities. As companies push the boundaries of innovation, consumers are increasingly aware of the need for clear and accurate information about the features they are paying for.
