Plateau State Government Advances Security and Economic Initiatives

The Plateau State Government has confirmed that the Federal Government’s initiative to install 5,000 surveillance cameras in the state to address insecurity is progressing. This effort is complemented by ongoing efforts to enhance local security mechanisms.

Arc. Samuel Jatau, Secretary to the State Government, shared this information during a press briefing in Jos on Wednesday. He outlined the administration's focus on both federal and local security strategies.

Community Resilience as Primary Defense

Jatau emphasized the importance of community resilience as the first line of defense against insecurity. He stated, “On this issue of security, if you ask me, nobody is going to come from Jupiter to give us security. I have always advised community resilience should be the first line of defense.”

He explained that while the federal government is deploying the cameras, it is crucial for communities to remain vigilant and proactive in maintaining safety.

Federal Surveillance Camera Initiative

Jatau confirmed that Plateau officials were part of a federal delegation that inspected surveillance equipment in China. He said, “Our officials have gone to China with the Honorable Minister of Communications, they have carried out an inspection, they have made contact, and they’ve discussed specifications and all that.”

However, he noted that the procurement process in China involves several steps, which contribute to the time lag in delivery. “I believe there are procedures before these monies can come out, before they will make payment. These things will be produced because that’s the procedure in China. It’s not like you’re just going to pick it on the shelf,” he added.

Existing Security Infrastructure

Jatau highlighted that the state has already implemented its own security mechanisms. “Even before this intervention of cameras by the federal government, we have our own security mechanisms that are in place. We have drones, we have a command center, where from now you can, you can actually zoom and see my house in the village,” he said.

He also mentioned that intelligence efforts have intercepted several attacks that did not reach public attention. “You will only know the attacks that have been successful,” he stated.

Commitment to Federal Security Projects

The SSG reiterated the administration’s support for federal security initiatives and expressed hope that the 5,000-camera project would be deployed once manufacturing and shipping are completed.

Addressing Pension Arrears

During the briefing, Jatau also addressed the issue of pension arrears. He stated that the state government requires about N60 billion to clear outstanding pension and gratuity arrears owed to retirees. Despite fiscal constraints, the administration has committed over N20 billion to pension payments since coming into office.

He clarified recent discussions around the governor’s remarks at the 3rd Year Thanksgiving Service, stating, “His Excellency, during the third year Thanksgiving anniversary said the government has spent over N16 billion. He didn’t say they have cleared pensions, but this is what we have spent so far.”

Pension Payment Model

Jatau explained that the administration adopted a chronological payment model to eliminate irregularities and corruption. “Instead of doing the haphazard method, which builds corruption, because people will have to go and give half of their pension to be able to be paid, it is strictly by year after year,” he said.

He noted that the Pension Board has progressed beyond 2011 in its payment schedule and expects the process to accelerate with sustained monthly allocations.

Economic Development and Agriculture

On economic policy, Jatau described agriculture as “the easiest and fastest pathway to prosperity.” The government has procured over 200 land tillers for distribution and secured hybrid potato seeds for commercial cultivation.

Additionally, the groundbreaking of a 500-cattle-per-day abattoir in Heipang, Barkin Ladi LGA, was announced as part of efforts to enter the global meat and dairy market. “Just last night, we met with UK investors interested in the abattoir and livestock/dairy sector. Preliminary talks have started on over $400 million in investment,” he said.

Call for Public Support

Jatau concluded by urging citizens to engage with government policies and support the administration’s long-term vision for Plateau. “There is so much to do with limited resources, so we ask for patience and understanding. Governor Mutfwang has focus and understands the problems. Plateau is naturally blessed — with the best weather, food, and people. Let us not waste it,” he said.
