The Future of Nigeria’s Tourism and E-commerce: A Digital Revolution

Nigeria’s tourism and e-commerce sectors are undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the need for digital innovation, technology, and artificial intelligence. Stakeholders in these industries have emphasized that the next wave of revenue will depend on how easily Nigerians can discover, book, and pay for travel services rather than just the appeal of destinations.

This call to action was made during the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Hotel and Tourism Group Joint Seminar with the E-Commerce Group, held in Lagos and themed “Tourism Meets Innovation: Powered by E-Commerce.” The event brought together industry leaders to discuss the convergence of tourism and e-commerce as a powerful digital growth engine.

The Role of E-Commerce in Tourism Growth

The President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Leye Kupoluyi, highlighted that tourism and e-commerce have become a single digital growth engine capable of transforming Nigeria’s travel and hospitality landscape. According to projections from the World Travel and Tourism Council, the tourism and e-commerce sectors are expected to contribute N11.2tn to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product in 2025, up from N10.9tn in 2024. Domestic tourism expenditure is also projected to reach N6.1tn.

Kupoluyi stated that the future of the industry lies in how easily Nigerians can access and pay for local travel. He noted that e-commerce has evolved from a parallel industry into the primary distribution channel for tourism. Projections indicate that Nigeria’s e-commerce market will grow from $9.35bn in 2025 to $18.68bn by 2031.

    The Rise of Social Commerce

Social commerce is emerging as a critical platform for Nigerian travel and hospitality. Kupoluyi pointed out that transaction value moving through social platforms is expected to nearly double, from US$2.04bn in 2025 to US$3.96bn by 2030. This means that hotels, resorts, and tour operators without frictionless checkout options on platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, or Facebook risk being invisible to a growing segment of consumer spending.

He also stressed the importance of broadband infrastructure and digital payment systems, noting that investment in these areas is now a revenue strategy rather than just an IT expense. Broadband penetration in Nigeria crossed 50% for the first time in November 2025, marking a key milestone for digital growth.

Strengthening Online Booking and Payment Capabilities

To support this shift, the LCCI plans to establish a joint digital-readiness initiative between its Hotel and Tourism Group and E-Commerce Group. This initiative aims to help hospitality operators improve their online booking and payment capabilities. Kupoluyi urged the groups to create a joint digital-readiness desk, pairing e-commerce expertise with hospitality inventory to ensure that every participating hotel, resort, and tour operator has a functioning social and online booking channel by next year.

    Customer Experience as a Differentiator

The Chairman of the E-Commerce Group and CEO of Jumia Nigeria, Temidayo Ojo, represented by Nicholas Obasigie, emphasized that customer experience has become the most important differentiator in the digital economy. He explained that today’s customers no longer buy products alone; they seek speed, convenience, trust, and after-sales support.

Obasigie highlighted the importance of seamless online discovery, fast and secure payments, reliable delivery, personalized engagement, and smooth transitions between offline and online channels. He noted that easy booking, instant confirmation, and flexible payment options lead to higher conversions.

He urged businesses to invest in digital infrastructure, improve customer service, embrace digital payments, build trust, and use data analytics for personalization. “The businesses that prioritize customer experience will dominate the next decade,” he said.

    The Impact of Artificial Intelligence

In his presentation on artificial intelligence and tourism innovation, Bade Adesemowo, Co-founder and CTO of eMigr8.ai, discussed how AI has already transformed industries globally and created new opportunities for tourism operators. He noted that AI can automate processes, personalize customer experiences, and improve efficiency.

Adesemowo emphasized the potential for hyper-personalizing tours based on specific client needs. He added that while AI adoption remains low globally, early adopters can gain a competitive advantage. “AI will not take your job, but somebody using AI will take your job,” he said.

Shaping the Future of Nigeria’s Travel Industry

Stakeholders agreed that the convergence of tourism, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence will shape the future of Nigeria’s travel industry. Operators that invest early in digital booking systems, seamless payment channels, and AI-powered customer experiences are positioned to capture a larger share of the sector’s projected growth.
