WhatsApp introduces paid 'Plus' features for advanced users

The Evolution of WhatsApp and the Introduction of a New Paid Tier

Since its launch in 2009, WhatsApp has been a free-to-use platform that revolutionized the way people communicate globally. Over the years, it has continuously added new features, expanding its user base significantly. For most users, it has become the go-to choice for connecting with friends and family. However, things may be changing soon as Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is reportedly planning to introduce a new optional paid subscription plan called "WhatsApp Plus."

What is WhatsApp Plus?

The introduction of WhatsApp Plus is not entirely unexpected, as Meta announced in January its plans to test premium tiers for platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. According to a report from WABetaInfo, the WhatsApp Plus subscription will offer additional features to paying customers. These include app customization and enhanced chat controls.

Currently, the WhatsApp Plus subscription plan is in development for both iOS and Android and is not publicly available yet. Users who choose not to opt into the subscription service will still have access to the app’s core functions, such as messaging, voice and video calls, media sharing, and all privacy options. The subscription will primarily focus on convenience rather than altering the fundamental messaging experience.

Customization and Enhanced Chat Features

One of the key features of WhatsApp Plus is expanded chat pinning. Currently, users can pin up to three chats in the app. With the subscription, this limit could be increased to 20, allowing users to keep more chats at the top of their chat list.

In addition to this, the paid plan may also bring multiple customization options for subscribers. These include the option to choose from 14 different app icons and adjust the accent colors from 19 color options. Changing the accent color may also affect other areas of the interface, such as tabs, filters, and action buttons.

Other potential features of the subscription plan include exclusive stickers only for subscribers, custom ringtones specifically for WhatsApp calls, and more interactive message reactions and conversation effects. The report suggests that WhatsApp may add more features over time based on user feedback.

No Pricing Yet

As of now, WhatsApp Plus hasn't been officially launched. It's still in the development phase, so the cost of the subscription is unknown. If the development proves successful, the feature might appear in future updates. WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a waitlist option, which will notify users once the premium plan becomes available.

This feature was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.9.6. Users may see a "join waitlist" banner within the settings page or sticker keyboard. However, signing up for the waitlist does not automatically enroll users in the paid service when it becomes available. The waitlist feature is currently available only to a select number of beta testers in certain regions. The report notes that WhatsApp will expand this availability to more users in the coming weeks.
