Deputy Prime Minister Baek, strengthens global AI leadership at the India AI Impact Summit

[USER PARABOLA Kim Araem reporter] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 13th that Vice Prime Minister Baek Kyung-hoon, also serving as Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, will attend the '2026 India AI Impact Summit' in New Delhi from the 18th to the 20th as the chief representative.

The AI Summit is a high-level platform for in-depth discussions on AI global governance. It holds significant meaning as it is being held for the first time in India, a Global South country. This summit is the fourth meeting following the previous discussions on "Safety" (United Kingdom, 2023), "Innovation and Inclusion" (South Korea, 2024), and "Action" (France, 2025), and will focus on the "impact" of AI on society as its core agenda.

The vice premier is scheduled to attend this summit as South Korea's representative, emphasizing the importance of close international cooperation to link AI technological advances with shared human values. In particular, the vice premier will share South Korea's domestic policy experiences, such as AI transformation in various fields (healthcare, manufacturing, education, etc.), based on the country's semiconductor and digital infrastructure competitiveness, as well as the implementation of the Basic Act on AI, and convey South Korea's proactive role in global AI cooperation.

At this summit, representatives from over 100 countries' governments and leaders from academia, industry, and research institutions leading the global AI ecosystem will participate in various discussions to expand the social utility of AI and explore implementation strategies. The vice premier will begin the official schedule of the Korean delegation by attending the opening ceremony of the AI summit, scheduled to start at 9 a.m. (local time) on the 19th, followed by the senior representatives session.

Especially during this summit, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to explore diverse cooperation strategies with domestic AI policies through meetings with delegations from major countries such as the United States and global AI companies. It is expected that practical and in-depth technology cooperation plans will be discussed, based on a deep understanding of AI technology, as Vice Minister Baek Kyung-hoon, who has extensive field experience and technical expertise, is leading these meetings.

Meanwhile, the vice minister will attend the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) Ministerial Council meeting on the 20th, co-chaired with Singapore, in conjunction with this summit. He will preside over the meeting and discuss the future direction of international AI governance. In his welcome speech, the vice minister plans to emphasize that as artificial intelligence has become a core driving force reshaping the entire economy and society, the international community should move beyond technological development discussions toward responsible utilization and achieving practical outcomes.

In addition, it mentions the importance of evidence-based policy discussions accumulated through cooperation with OECD, and shares South Korea's vision of 'AI Basic Society.' 'AI Basic Society' is a policy direction that aims to use artificial intelligence as a foundation to expand everyone's capabilities, rather than as a technology limited to a few, so that anyone can access the benefits of AI and create new opportunities through it.

Vice Foreign Minister Bae said, "Participation in this India AI Impact Summit will be an opportunity for South Korea to solidify its capabilities and solidarity to lead global AI governance, going beyond being just a technological power, continuing from the Seoul Summit and the APEC AI Initiative. It also has significance in expanding the 'AI diplomacy' intersection with global South countries."
