Andong: TUSER PARABOLA Newspaper, Jeong Jae-woo reporter. Lee Sam-gyeol, former vice minister of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Safety, officially announced his candidacy for mayor of Andong in the next local election.

This former vice minister said at a press conference held on the 12th in Jeongang Market, "I decided to run for the mayor of Andong out of a sense of responsibility that we can no longer retreat."

This former vice minister emphasized, "It was certainly not a light decision," adding, "It was not because I was afraid of three consecutive defeats, but because I could not ignore the reality in Andong." He then said, "I feel sorry for not keeping my promise to personally greet the citizens after the election," and explained that he had to leave the area due to his family's illness.

He diagnosed that Andong is currently facing a complex crisis including population decline, industrial stagnation, and outflow of young people. Especially, he said, "The next four years will be a critical period for the survival of Andong," and added, "If this time is not saved, it will not be possible to guarantee the future."

This former vice minister proposed the resolution of the 36th Division's land issue as his first key promise. He plans to attract national institutions such as defense-related research institutes to the site, which had no clear long-term utilization plan, in order to lay the foundation for population influx and job creation. He stated, "I will create a real turning point for the local economy through actions, not just words."

As the second commitment, he proposed the establishment of the College of Medicine at Kyungguk University. Through this, he plans to develop Andong as a medical center in the northern Gyeongsang region. He said, "We have been conducting discussions with the university and relevant ministries," and "we will ensure that citizens can feel tangible results."

Thirdly, it was announced that a large-scale development project to attract large resorts and industrial facilities to the recent wildfire-affected areas will be promoted. It was explained that discussions are currently underway with local company Pongsan Group, and it was stated that "the investment intention has been confirmed." The position is to lead the early announcement and initiation of the project.

The fourth commitment is to ease the restrictions around the Andong Dam through discussions with the Korea Water Resources Corporation, and to promote a large-scale solar power generation project in conjunction with government policies. In particular, it was stated that a structure will be designed allowing citizens to participate as shareholders and receive dividends, linking it to stable income.

Fifth, it was announced that a railway and road network connecting the Dongchon New City, the old downtown area of Andong, the new train station, and the Uiseong Airport would be established as soon as possible. This strategy aims to position Andong as the provincial capital and a transportation hub.

This former vice minister emphasized, "Since Andong has a low level of financial self-reliance, we will attract projects that are directly invested in and operated by the nation and large corporations, rather than projects that worsen the city's finances, in order to create jobs without any burden." He also stated, "We will actively utilize the cooperation channels with the central government to prepare for Andong's 100-year food source."

Finally, he said, "I hope that all citizens' homes are filled with health and hope during the Lunar New Year," and "I will be evaluated based on results and achievements."
