Engineers as Catalysts for Environmental Sustainability and National Development
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability, urging industry professionals to adopt eco-friendly practices in their work. This call to action was made during the inauguration of Engr. Saheed Busari as the fifth Chairman of the NSE Oluyole Branch, alongside the induction of new corporate members.
The event, themed “Innovative Engineering Practice: Engineers as Catalysts for Environmental Sustainability and National Development,” highlighted the critical role of engineers in shaping a sustainable future. Speaking on Wednesday, Busari emphasized the pivotal role engineers play in advancing environmental sustainability and driving national development.
“Across the world, engineers are at the centre of solving humanity’s most pressing challenges: energy access, climate change, infrastructure deficits, water security, urbanisation, and industrial growth. In Nigeria, these challenges are even more urgent. Our country stands at a defining moment where engineering decisions will shape economic resilience, environmental sustainability, and national prosperity. Engineering is not just about machines, systems, or infrastructure; rather, it is about improving lives,” he said.
Busari pledged that his administration would focus on key strategic priorities, including professional development for members, industry relevance and strategic partnerships, innovation, institutional strengthening, and infrastructure development, among others.
The Role of Sustainable Engineering Practices
Dr. Olufunmilade Akingbagbohun, the former National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), stated that engineering remained a foundational force for sustainable development and national progress. Represented by the past chairman of the Association of Professional Women Engineers, Engr. Raheemat Adabanija, she added that prioritising sustainable engineering practices would help transform knowledge and innovation into practical solutions that drive economic growth, environmental protection, and social stability.
Akingbagbohun, who served as the guest speaker at the event, urged the new executives to uphold the core values of engineering and embrace their professional responsibilities. “This moment represents not just recognition, but a call to service, leadership, and ethical excellence, where integrity, innovation, and commitment to national priorities must guide practice in building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for generations to come,” she said.

Earlier in his remarks, the NSE President, Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, charged members to give their full cooperation and support to the new leadership. Represented by the past NSE vice president, Engr. Ademola Agoro, the president noted that the Oluyole Branch’s focus on sustainable engineering solutions aligned with the objectives of the NSE, which include advancing engineering practice, promoting professional development, and contributing meaningfully to national development.
He commended the new inductees for taking the bold step toward becoming full-fledged professional engineers. “This is a remarkable achievement and a major milestone on your journey toward becoming a fully-fledged professional engineer. Today, you are being welcomed into a distinguished community of professionals committed to excellence, ethics, and service to humanity. It is a moment of pride for you, your family, and your well-wishers. NSE remains firmly committed to supporting your professional journey, providing a vital platform for continuous professional development, knowledge sharing, mentorship, networking with peers, industry leaders, and experts. I strongly encourage you to remain active members of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Oluyole Branch and to participate fully in its professional and developmental programmes,” he said.

Under Busari’s leadership, the Oluyole Branch is expected to focus on several key areas. These include:

- Encouraging innovation by supporting research and development initiatives.
- Institutional strengthening to ensure efficient operations and effective governance.
