OPIT Launches Online Doctorate in AI

A New Frontier in AI Education for African Professionals
The Open Institute of Technology (OPIT) has introduced a groundbreaking professional doctorate in applied Artificial Intelligence (AI), set to begin in September 2026. This online programme is designed to meet the growing demand for tech leadership across Africa, where digital transformation is reshaping industries and creating new opportunities.
This Level eight qualification is a direct response to the increasing need for advanced AI expertise in key sectors such as finance, healthcare, education, telecoms, and public policy. As Africa's technology ecosystems expand, there is a clear demand for professionals who can harness AI to drive innovation and sustainable growth.
Unlike traditional PhDs, which are often focused on academic research, OPIT’s doctorate emphasizes applied research with real-world impact. The programme equips professionals with the skills needed to design and implement AI-driven solutions within their organizations. Assessments focus not only on academic rigor but also on the practical value of research outcomes, ensuring that graduates can make meaningful contributions to their fields.
Francesco Profumo, Rector of OPIT, highlights the importance of continuous learning in today's fast-paced world. “In a world where knowledge evolves at an unprecedented pace, education can no longer be considered a phase of life but must be a continuous process,” he says. He adds that innovative doctoral programmes like this prepare professionals to lead technological and social change.
The programme is tailored for professionals, executives, and managers across key industries, as well as academics and researchers seeking to apply artificial intelligence in practical contexts. Riccardo Ocleppo, Founder of OPIT, notes the strong demand in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Cameroon for leaders who can use AI responsibly and productively. “This professional doctorate was created to fill that gap, offering a flexible pathway for working professionals,” he says.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) discipline. Those with a Master’s in other fields may also apply if they have at least five years of professional experience in areas where AI has a significant impact.
The programme includes an intermediate exit option. From the second year, participants who choose not to continue can obtain a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Applied Artificial Intelligence. This flexibility ensures that learners can benefit from the programme at different stages of their careers.
Lorenzo Livi, Associate Professor and Programme Head at OPIT, emphasizes the importance of applying AI rigorously and responsibly. “The challenge is not simply understanding AI, but applying it rigorously and responsibly to generate value,” he says. “We train professionals capable of leading AI-enabled transformation while ensuring ethical and sustainable adoption.”
Applications for the premier class of the Professional Doctorate in Applied Artificial Intelligence are now open. This initiative marks a significant step forward in AI education, offering a unique opportunity for African professionals to develop cutting-edge skills and lead the next wave of technological innovation.
Open Institute of Technology is a fully accredited online higher education institution recognized and accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), under both the European Qualification Framework (EQF) and Malta Qualification Framework (MQF).
