Ian Hutchinson recently made his debut with the RST Team and introduced the updated RST V4.2 D3O Airbag Leather Suit and Pro Series gloves, which will be used during the upcoming Isle of Man TT. This gear is not only high-performance but also accessible to a wide range of riders.

Hutchinson's new gear features D3O impact protection technology, which is crucial for protecting one of the most successful road racers in history. With 16 Isle of Man TT wins and 27 podium finishes, Hutchinson has set a high standard in the world of motorcycle racing. In 2010, he achieved an unprecedented feat by winning all five solo TT races in a single week. His performance is supported by gear that is designed to protect him from the extreme conditions of the race, and it’s now available for others to use as well.

For the 2026 IOM TT and North West 200, Hutchinson will be wearing the RST V4.2 D3O Airbag Leather Suit and Pro Series gloves. These models are not exclusive to him; every RST rider will wear this combination during the IOM TT. Riders can purchase the same gear at the event this year, making it more accessible than ever.

The Importance of Protection

Hutchinson emphasizes the importance of reliable protection in racing. “Racing demands total concentration and commitment, and I need protection I don’t have to think about,” he said. “My RST race suit with D3O protection is incredibly comfortable and moves with me, but I know it’s there doing its job when it matters most. That confidence lets me focus purely on the race ahead.”

The RST V4.2 D3O Airbag Leather Suit stands out due to its comprehensive protection. It includes Level 2 D3O armor in key areas such as the knees, elbows, shoulders, and hips. Additionally, it features built-in Level 2 back protection, which is rare in modern leather suits. The suit also comes with an integrated performance airbag, requiring an in&motion subscription of around $12 per month or a one-time activation fee of $400–$500.

The outer material of the suit is made from kangaroo leather and drum-dyed cowhide, with carbon shoulder and knee cups for added durability. The garment receives a AAA rating, thanks in part to double leather and DuPont Kevlar in impact areas. The suit also features quick-release hook and loop knee sliders for convenience.

The official MSRP of the RST V4.2 D3O Airbag Leather Suit is €1,526.95 ($1,794.28) in Europe. Considering the level of protection and performance it offers, it is considered a relative bargain compared to similar products from competitors. There is currently no official US price from RST.
