Eglin AFB Launches New Electronic Warfare Unit

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. - Eglin Air Force Base has taken a significant step forward by activating the 337th Electronic Warfare Squadron within the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing. This development marks an important milestone for the base and its surrounding community.

“This is a huge win for the 350th, for the Eglin community, and for our Air Force,” said Colonel Andrew Prue, the deputy wing commander of the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing. “It gives us that credibility, that organizational structure that we need.”

The newly formed squadron plays a critical role in advancing the capabilities of the F-35 jets. According to base leaders, the squadron is responsible for developing, testing, and collecting mission data on these advanced aircraft.

Col. Prue explained the importance of the squadron in simple terms. “Think of it like an iPhone that requires consistent software updates to get the latest apps and modules to work. The squadron develops those apps that will go into the jet to make it as lethal as possible.”

In addition to supporting the F-35 program, the squadron also plays a key role in strengthening alliances with NATO partners. Col. Prue emphasized that the unit supports close NATO allies who have invested in the F-35 aircraft.

“So as we go into military conflicts of the future, our aircraft all work together seamlessly,” said Col. Prue. “Being able to affect whatever that military objective is.”

The 337th Electronic Warfare Squadron is unique in its composition. According to Bryan Isley, the director of the squadron, it is made up entirely of civilian employees.

“I report to, and work with the military members," said Isley. "But otherwise we conduct all day in and day out as civilians."

Isley added that becoming a squadron provides a sense of identity and purpose for the team. “It’s about building a strong, cohesive unit that can operate independently while still working closely with military personnel.”

This new structure not only enhances the operational effectiveness of the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing but also reinforces the collaboration between civilian and military personnel at Eglin Air Force Base.
