West Jones High School Robotics Team Hosts FIRST Expo

JONES COUNTY, Miss. - The West Jones High School rookie robotics team, known as the Robostangs, is preparing to host an expo for local FIRST Robotics teams on Tuesday. This event marks the team’s first year participating in the program.
The Robostangs consist of 15 students who are eager to showcase their progress and passion for robotics. Jairo Garcia, a member of the team, expressed his excitement about the opportunity to share their journey with the community.
“I’m really excited to show our community what we have done as a team, as rookies, as beginners, and how far we can go in a couple of months,” Garcia said.
In addition to the Robostangs, four other local teams will also take part in the expo. This community outreach event serves as a valuable preparation for the Robostangs’ first competition this month at the Magnolia Center.
The event aims to educate the public about the benefits of the FIRST Robotics program. Melissa Bryant, the coach of the Mustang Robotics Team, emphasized the importance of such events in helping students develop skills that can lead to success in the workforce.
“...Just to educate the people of Jones County about what first is and how it builds the students in our community up to be able to do robotics and to work in the workforce,” Bryant said.
The FIRST Robotics expo will take place at South Central Place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The venue is located at 2260 Highway 15 in Laurel. Residents are encouraged to attend and support the young innovators in their efforts to explore the world of robotics.
