Jaafar Jackson's Painful 'Michael' Filming Journey Ahead of Box Office Records

The Physical Struggles of Portraying a Legend
Portraying a cultural icon like Michael Jackson is no easy task, and for Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the King of Pop, it came with a unique set of challenges. In a recent episode of "Sneaker Shopping" with Complex, Jaafar opened up about the physical toll of playing his uncle in the 2026 film "Michael." While the movie has been a massive success, the journey to bring the iconic performer to life was anything but simple.
The Dance Demands
One of the most significant hurdles Jaafar faced was the intense dance sequences required to capture Michael Jackson's legendary moves. As he explained to host Joe La Puma, the physical demands of the role were immense.
“Dancing in loafers, especially, you know, I had to dance in a half size down or full size down so I can break them in because it’s leather, so they kind of expand over time,” Jaafar said. “So the first two months of dancing, those feet are scrunched and then to do the toe stand, the moonwalk and the side, all these different moves in them. It caused a lot of complications with my feet.”
The process of breaking in the shoes was just the beginning. The rigorous choreography led to severe discomfort, particularly when performing moves like the toe stand and moonwalk repeatedly.
Numbness and Pain
Jaafar described how his feet would often go numb during long dance sessions. At times, the numbness lasted for up to two hours, leaving his toes completely white and cold. This condition made it difficult to continue performing, as he had to constantly assess whether his feet would regain feeling.
“Sometimes it would go numb for 20 minutes, sometimes it would go numb for 2 hours. I’m like, it’s not coming back and my toe would go completely white, it get completely cold. I’d have to gauge it. So, it really depends on that day but the move that would really kill the toes is the toe stand. Doing that repetitively is … not good.”
To recover from the pain, Jaafar would apply heat to his feet, which helped restore some sensation. However, the numbness only increased his pain threshold, making each performance more challenging than the last.
A Box Office Success
Despite the physical challenges, "Michael" has proven to be a massive hit. Since its late April release, the film has grossed over $240 million at the box office, surpassing previous records and becoming the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. It has even overtaken "Bohemian Rhapsody" in terms of domestic earnings, although it still has a ways to go to match the international haul of nearly $700 million.
The film's success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the cast and crew, especially Jaafar Jackson, who brought a personal touch to the portrayal of one of the most iconic performers in history.
