Thames Water Launches New Initiative to Fix Underground Leaks

A New Approach to Water Conservation

An innovative partnership is taking shape in the UK, focusing on a critical issue that often goes unnoticed: underground water leaks. Origin Tech, a company based in the North East, has been working with Thames Water to implement a cutting-edge solution aimed at reducing water loss through advanced technology.

The Role of Technology in Detecting Leaks

Origin Tech specialises in artificial intelligence and satellite technology, which are now being used to detect hidden leaks within the water distribution network. Their system, called Origin Orbit, utilises satellite imagery combined with AI algorithms to identify underground leaks with remarkable precision. This method can pinpoint issues within a 30-metre radius, making it significantly faster and more accurate than traditional techniques.

Shane Gloster, who leads leakage operations at Thames Water, highlighted the importance of this technology. He noted that many of the leaks occur underground and are not visible to customers. "A huge proportion of our leaks are never seen by customers," he said. "To repair these as quickly as we can, it is vital that we use the latest innovative technology available."

The Partnership and Its Impact

The collaboration between Thames Water and Origin Tech began in March and follows a successful 18-week trial. During this period, the technology identified over 800 leaks, resulting in an estimated saving of 8.7 million litres of water per day. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as Thames Water becomes the first water company in the UK to fully integrate the Origin Orbit technology into its regular operations.

John Marsden, co-founder of Origin Tech, pointed out the scale of the problem. He stated, "With one-fifth of all water in the UK being lost through leakage every year, the need for innovative solutions is evident." The company, founded in 2019, has already established partnerships with 12 UK water companies, contributing to the prevention of more than three billion litres of water leakage across the country.

Benefits of the New Technology

The implementation of the Origin Orbit system offers several advantages:

  • Faster Detection: The use of satellite data allows for quicker identification of leaks, reducing the time required for repairs.
  • Improved Accuracy: AI algorithms enhance the accuracy of leak detection, ensuring that even the most elusive leaks are identified.
  • Cost Efficiency: By addressing leaks promptly, the technology helps reduce the overall cost of water loss and maintenance.

Future Prospects

As the partnership continues to develop, there is potential for further expansion of the technology to other regions and water companies. The success of the Origin Orbit system could serve as a model for other utilities looking to adopt similar solutions to combat water leakage effectively.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Origin Tech and Thames Water represents a significant step forward in the fight against water loss. By leveraging advanced technology, they are not only improving the efficiency of their operations but also contributing to the broader goal of sustainable water management in the UK.
