Vivobarefoot's Custom 3D-Scanned Sandals

A New Era in Footwear Personalisation

Vivobarefoot, a brand renowned for its barefoot-inspired footwear, has introduced a groundbreaking product that redefines the concept of 3D-printed shoes. The new sandal, called the VivoBiome Tabi Gen 02, is designed to offer an ultra-personalised fit by using a customer's foot scan. This innovative approach ensures that each pair of sandals is tailored specifically to the individual, promoting natural movement and comfort.

The creation of the VivoBiome Tabi Gen 02 was made possible through a collaboration with Carbon, a company known for its work on high-profile projects such as Adidas’ Futurecraft 4D and 4DFWD shoes. Carbon’s advanced technology has previously demonstrated how 3D printing can move beyond simple prototypes and into scalable production. With this new partnership, Vivobarefoot is taking a significant step forward in the realm of custom footwear.

Shifting from Mass Production to Personalisation

Unlike traditional mass-produced shoes, the focus of the VivoBiome Tabi Gen 02 is on personalisation. Customers begin their journey by booking an in-store scan, which captures the exact shape of both feet. This data is then used to craft a unique sandal that fits perfectly, including a distinctive split-toe "tabi" design that allows the big toe to move independently. This feature not only enhances flexibility but also promotes a more natural gait.

The design of the sandal is inspired by the principles of natural movement, aiming to improve balance, stability, and propulsion. By allowing the foot to function more naturally, the VivoBiome Tabi Gen 02 supports a healthier walking experience. Additionally, the Gen 02 model introduces a new lightweight foamed material, produced using Carbon’s additive manufacturing process. This innovation is said to provide enhanced flexibility, comfort, and responsiveness, while also reducing material waste due to the on-demand production model.

Embracing Sustainability and Innovation

While the concept of scanning feet and producing bespoke footwear may still be novel, it represents a significant shift in the industry. Scanning is currently available at select Vivobarefoot stores, and the unique design of the sandal may not appeal to everyone. However, the brand's commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly manufacturing sets it apart from many competitors.

Vivobarefoot has long been at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of sustainable practices in footwear. Unlike many other brands that have only superficially addressed environmental concerns, Vivobarefoot has consistently focused on creating products that are both functional and environmentally responsible. The personalised sandals represent a natural evolution of this philosophy, offering a product that helps users feel closer to the ground while also minimising environmental impact.

The VivoBiome Tabi Gen 02 will be available starting on 4 May 2026, with a price tag of £110 or $150. Initially, the service will be offered exclusively through Vivobarefoot stores in New York, London, and Tokyo. Customers in these locations can book a foot scan and place an order for their custom-made sandals.

As the world continues to embrace more sustainable and personalised solutions, the VivoBiome Tabi Gen 02 stands as a testament to the future of footwear. It blends cutting-edge technology with a deep understanding of human anatomy, offering a product that is not only innovative but also aligned with the values of modern consumers.
