Who Does Stephen Colbert Play in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy?

Stephen Colbert has become one of the most recognizable names in late-night television. Over the years, his show "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" has captivated audiences with its blend of humor, satire, and insightful commentary. However, as the show is set to conclude in May, Colbert now has the opportunity to explore new ventures beyond his late-night platform. One of his latest projects is "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," a series available on Paramount+.
While fans may have noticed Colbert's name in the credits, they might be surprised to learn that he hasn't appeared on screen during the first season. This is because he voices a character in the show. In a video message shared at New York Comic Con in October 2025, Colbert revealed, "I am honored to announce that my beautiful voice will be joining 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' as the Digital Dean of Students." He continued, "Where I'll get to announce things like, 'Attention, Ensign Krebs, your Talaxian Furfly has exited the replicator and is now mating with itself. Please report to Science Lab One immediately. Children are watching.' That's an actual line."
Colbert added, "I'm thrilled to join this universe that I've loved for so long, and unlike my on-camera castmates, I'm thrilled to join it without having to spend four hours in hair and makeup every day." His character can be heard throughout the series, delivering various school-related announcements that add a unique touch to the show.
Expanding the Star Trek universe

It makes sense that Colbert would take on a role in such a beloved sci-fi franchise. The late-night host has long been a fan of fantasy and science fiction. He is well-known for his admiration of "The Lord of the Rings" and has even answered questions about J.R.R. Tolkien during live tapings of his show. Additionally, he made a cameo appearance in the 2013 film "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."
Colbert's passion for science fiction extends to literature as well. In a 2018 interview with Paul Giamatti, who plays the part-Klingon villain Nus Braka on "Starfleet Academy," Colbert spoke about his love for works by authors like Henry Kuttner and Larry Niven.
Recently, Colbert has been particularly enthusiastic about his role in the series. During a January episode of "The Late Show," he had a humorous exchange with Giamatti, asking, "How am I as a coworker?" Giamatti jokingly replied, "You need a little work, but you're an up-and-comer. You've got a future."

Colbert's voice adds a unique flavor to "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," blending his signature humor with the iconic Star Trek universe. Fans of both the franchise and Colbert's work are eagerly anticipating more of his contributions to the series. As the show continues to expand the Star Trek world, Colbert's involvement brings a fresh perspective and a touch of comedic brilliance to the narrative.
