AI Protects Old Mutual Insurance from Sh400m Fraud Loss

The Role of AI in Transforming Insurance Operations

Old Mutual General Insurance has demonstrated the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) in the insurance sector. By investing in AI technologies, the company managed to save approximately Sh400 million last year through streamlined operations and enhanced fraud detection. This success highlights the growing importance of automation in the industry.

The insurer explained that AI has significantly reduced the amount of paperwork involved in the claims management process. This not only lowers operational costs but also improves the accuracy of fraud detection by analyzing complex patterns within data-heavy claim forms. According to Japheth Ogalloh, managing director of Old Mutual General Insurance, AI has played a crucial role in identifying revenue leakages and detecting previously unnoticed fraud patterns.

“We are relying on AI to reduce areas of revenue leakages and also detect fraud patterns that were initially difficult to catch. Last year, we saw a saving of almost Sh400 million that is directly attributed to AI tools adjudication,” said Ogalloh during an interview.

The savings achieved by Old Mutual were a combination of process efficiencies and the identification of fraudulent claims throughout the value chain. Additionally, AI implementation improved customer experience and engagement by enabling faster claims processing.

Industry-Wide Trends and Challenges

Old Mutual’s AI-related savings came at a time when the general insurer reduced its insurance service expenses from Sh16.81 billion in the previous year to Sh16.69 billion. This reduction was notable as it contrasted with the industry trend where many insurers experienced rising service expenses due to increasing claims and claims servicing costs.

AI-powered analytics have proven effective in sifting through large volumes of data to identify anomalies and flag suspicious patterns. This capability allows insurers to prevent fraud before losses occur, thereby protecting their financial stability.

Old Mutual General Insurance is one of the latest insurers to disclose the use of AI in claims management. In an industry where customers often face delays in settlements, this development underscores the need for more efficient and accurate processes. Insurers frequently report that up to 30% of claims are fraudulent and require detailed scrutiny.

Other insurers who have adopted AI in their operations include Jubilee Holdings, Britam Group, APA, and Sanlam Allianz. These companies are navigating the delicate balance between identifying fictitious claims and ensuring genuine ones are processed promptly to maintain profitability and avoid cost increases.

Benefits of AI Adoption in the Insurance Sector

A recent McKinsey & Company report highlighted that the best-in-class insurers adopting AI are seeing significant cost reductions in onboarding new customers—up to 20% to 40%. Additionally, these insurers have reported up to a 5% improvement in claims accuracy.

In Kenya, insurers have been automating their processes to meet the demands of customers, especially younger generations seeking fully digital and personalized insurance products. The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) noted that AI has helped automate routine processes, enhance fraud detection, and improve customer engagement. As a result, genuine claims are now being paid within 30 days.

Insurers have introduced AI-powered chatbots that provide instant responses to customer queries. Furthermore, machine learning and AI are being integrated into actuarial modeling and fraud detection systems to further streamline operations.

Future Prospects and Continued Innovation

As the insurance industry continues to evolve, the integration of AI will likely play an even greater role in shaping the future of customer service and operational efficiency. With the ability to analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns, AI is proving to be a valuable tool in combating fraud and improving overall performance.

The ongoing adoption of AI in the insurance sector reflects a broader shift toward technology-driven solutions that enhance both business outcomes and customer satisfaction. As more insurers embrace these innovations, the industry is poised for continued growth and transformation.
